In Case, éventualité et relations interpropositionnelles

Introducing an adverbial clause to refer to a possible event is most of the time carried out by means of the complex conjunction in case, which has been grammaticalised. The syntax and meaning of in case are different from those of if when the latter is used in a conditional structure, although dictionaries and grammars often give them as more or less equivalent. This similarity can only be found in peripheral constructions, when the subordinate clause is used to show the relevance of the message expressed in the superordinate clause. The complex conjunction also enables a speaker to build a negative finality, depending on the interclausal relations which come into play. In case can also function as an adverb.
L’introduction de subordonnées circonstancielles exprimant une éventualité se fait la plupart du temps en anglais au moyen de la locution conjonctive in case, locution qui s’est grammaticalisée. Son fonctionnement syntaxique et son sens diffèrent du if hypothétique, bien que dictionnaires et grammaires donnent souvent ce if comme équivalent. Ceci n’est avéré que dans des constructions périphériques. In case permet également, en fonction des relations interpropositionnelles en jeu, de construire une finalité négative. La locution a par ailleurs un fonctionnement adverbial.
