What does it mean to be in this place? Perspectives on early childhood using the Mosaic approach

What does it mean to be in this place? Young children’s perspectives can provide important insights into how early childhood environments are experienced. This presentation reflects over the past fifteen years working with young children and practitioners using the Mosaic approach. This includes collaborative research studies working with young children, architects and practitioners in the UK and with early childhood practitioners and children in Denmark. The theoretical and methodological roots of this visual, participatory framework are discussed. The concepts of identity and belonging are explored in relation to young children’s sense of place and transitions. The role of curiosity and ‘uncertainty’ are highlighted as practitioners find new ways of engaging with children’s perspectives on everyday life and pedagogy in the kindergarten.
