Peut-on être écologiquement vertueux sans être socialement responsable ? : L'exemple du recyclage des déchets industriels au dix-neuvième siècle

Abstract : Sustainable development theorists frequently stress various ways by which market economies could be reformed in order to preserve the natural environment. Within management sciences, the concept of “corporate social (or environmental) responsibility” has been developed to provide guidelines to this effect. European industrial history, however, suggests that the creation of valuable by-products from polluting industrial waste and emissions was “business as usual”, resting on economic behaviors inherent to a free market economy. This case suggests that spontaneous market incentives might have been more compatible with "environmental responsibility" than usually believed.
